Over-temp verdict and water pump saga Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 3 Sep 2010 13:17:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just got my car back from K & N Automotive where they did some maintenance work for me today. They installed the water pump after I failed to break loose two banjo fittings last week, Removed and Replaced both the front crank seal and the oil pump seal (the oil pump seal was well along in its conversion from rubber to Bakelite), and troubleshot my recently consistent over-temp conditions whenever the A/C is running.
The verdict on the over-temp is a failed radiator. The fans run, the relays cycle, the control logic is sending the correct commands at the specified temperature and time points. On the test drive Nick said he was reading 230 degrees on his Tech-II with the A/C off. He said temps on a hot day with A/C running conceivably could reach 245 degrees and I am darn lucky that I don't have head gasket or warped head problems! (He checked for both) They car is going back in next Friday for a new radiator. No A/C for me in the mean time!
All those who have been following my water pump saga will love this. I asked Nick what he had to do to loosen the two banjo fittings on the turbo cooling water line. He gave me a strange stare, said he doesn't touch the turbo side fitting as the pump side fitting snaps back an 1/8-inch or more when the bolt is removed, enough room to negotiate the old pump out and new pump in. He said he put a 6-point socket and wrench on the pump fitting and it backed right out, never even argued with him about loosening. I explained that I saturated both of them three times each last week with PB Blast, gave them an hour soak time after each spraying, and still couldn't get either one to budge! He just laughed.
I guess the extra long soak time and all the hot-cold cycles in between did the trick!
