My initial post may have been a little hard to understand. I did remove the calipers on both sides for the reason you cite. I adjusted the parking brake shoes so that they were almost 100% drag-free with the hydraulic calipers removed, but when I engaged and released the parking brake the left mechanism reverted to the "oncer per revolution" rubbing. I guess that points to the retraction mechanism of the parking brake assembly, which appears to be a tiny spring on the back of the hub, probably coupled with some drag in the scissor-type expander doo-dad (part #38).
I guess I'll just tighten up the adjuster in the center console and let the shoes wear down a little from driving around.
Thanks
