if it was a pre-2004 car, no big surprise. I suspect most pre-2004 cars are slowly, unknowingly sludging... we looked at a 2003 wagon that was well maintained, all the work at the dealer etc with all records going back basically to purchase. Sludged. Some effort to repair by the dealer, but not sufficiently adequate in my view to purchase.
2004+ seem good, but would be interested if anyone is seeing sludging (aside from pathological cases of poor maintenance)...
wrt the Lexus... not for me, but I know some go for the appliance style reliability vs some maintenance. One of our c900s (now experiencing a massive maintenance hump + at risk of becoming parts) went 20 years at my parents with almost nothing besides oil changes, brake pads, etc and a few exhausts (only non-maintenance item in 20 years was the rack). I don't want to jinx the 2004 9-5 that replaced it, but no issues yet! 9-5 is an amazingly good car imho...
