PCV mod on 2003 Aero

I recently purchased a 2003 Aero with 96K miles. I have decent service records showing frequent oil changes. I spoke with the dealer that maintained the car throughout its life and he said both previous owners took good care of the car and he feels there is no sludge problem with the car. My concern is when I look in the oil filler tube I see oil caking/sludge buildup at the top of the tube. The car has a strange PCV arrangement that may have caused this...the white PCV Check Valve is connected to a threaded nipple that is tapped into the filler tube, about halfway down where the sludge begins. The nipple on the valve cover that the check valve normally connects to is plugged. The valve cover behind the PCV nipple is squeakly clean. Anyone see this arrangement before? I'm very familiar with PCV#6 and will be doing the mod this weekend. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks...
