DTE goes crazy last 1/4 of tank.

It'll say I'm good for another 80+ miles as it settles into the red on the gas gauge (last 1/4 tank), then next time you start the car, "Refill tank now" or whatever that message. Had this happen few days ago, promptly refilled, and only got 15.5 gallons in it. This is after I had the sending unit / fuel pump replaced under warranty last week.
I never saw that in my 2002 Aero SW, and I took that one down to less than a gallon.
What prompted me to take in with complaint was from a month ago, where on toll road, watched it precipitously drop from about 70-80 miles left to about 13.5, where at the end it would tick off a remaining mile about every tenth. I'm on NY toll road, construction on side, no place to even pull off. Took next exit, probably drove at least 15 miles after it said no fuel left, and still put in just over 16 gallons.
Any ideas before I take it back in?
thanks
Ed
