These switches can go bad for a number of different reasons. On mine, the grease from the thumbwheel part of the switch assembly had "migrated" onto the contact area on the circuit board, effectively keeping the switch turned "on" regardless of the position of the thumbwheel itself. Wiping off the excess grease eliminated the short.
I had already gotten a new switch on eBay, so didn't find the problem until I examined the old switch closely. So, now I've got an extra switch, ready to swap in when the next one goes bad...
I also installed LED "bulbs" before I installed the new switch.
I got the LEDs (the NEOx-GHP high otput ones) from the superbrightled folks - see url below.
