Mark, can you clarify what you mean by "start to burn with visible smoke." Is the smoke from the surface of the bulb or the socket/ connector That the bulb plugs into? If the smoke is from the exterior glass surface of the bulb, then the bulbs have been contaminated. Perhaps oil from your hands or from contact with something during storage since you changed them out.Clean gloves, paper towel etc must be used when handling these bulbs. Oils from hands etc can cause hot spots causing premature failure during use. If the smoke is from the connector, there may be corrosion on contacts of the bulb or socket.Cheers Doug
