Not sure sludge would affect fuel mileage

However, Mobil 1 5W30 is not the right oil for your engine. It does not meet ACEA A3/B3 specs which are what's really required for the B235 engine. You need to run Mobil 1 0W40, 10W40 High Mileage, or one of several other oils that meet the higher specification.
Popping the valve cover can give you some idea, but to really know about sludge you need to drop the pan. OTOH, if it's had regular oil changes you may be just fine. FWIW, my daughter's boyfriend has a 2000 9-5 with 210K. It had had regular service before he got it a year ago. When we did the VC gasket the top end looked great.
SO...
Has the way you drive or places you drive changed? Are you in more traffic than you were before?
What are you running for tires? What are your tire pressures?
Do you have a dragging brake?
Is your catalytic converter failing or plugged?
Are you seeing a CEL (check engine light)?
Could you have a failed oxygen sensor that is for some reason not causing the CEL to come on? (a dead O2 sensor can dramatically affect mileage)
Are you running rich and not aware of it?
Are you using any oil?
If you've been running rich and/or using oil it can foul the cat and that would impact gas mileage.
How's the tranny oil/fluid?
And are you getting your mileage off the dashboard computer or actual miles divided by gallons calculation?
Hope this helps!
