Gurgling Belching in the expansion tank

What's causing rather violent gurgling and belching in the coolant expansion tank? Also, the coolant seems to disappear and not always come out anywhere. The exhaust seems to have only the normal vapor after start up and the temp gauge has not gone above midway yet.
I just purchased my first 9-5 a week ago. It's a 2001 wagon, 3.0 V6 with 136k miles. The engine seems to run smooth and have plenty of power. When I bought it last week and the radiator leaked badly where the black plastic meets the metal.
I've sealed most of the radiator leaks with JB weld now and plan to add Barrs to seal the remaining smaller leaks. However, I am clueless as to why the violent belching comes from the expansion tank and only when I take the cap off.
What problems could this be indicating?
No owners manual, papers or receipts came with the car.
What is the capacity of the cooling system?
Thanks for any information or advice.
My other car is a 1996 9k cs that I've had for 4 years.
