When the engine has been operated seriously sludged up for a long time it has been severely worn and will never be correct. This points to long term neglect.
Just needing to clean the oil pan and oil pickup is more typical. You want to make sure the oil pressure is good (oil light goes out promptly when engine is started) and there is no clattering/knocking when the engine is running. When the oil pan is cleaned it is usual for there to be 'coffee grounds' in the bottom of the oil pan and partially blocking the oil pickup. If the oil pickup is completely blocked then the engine has likely been starved for oil; if there is no clattering/knocking then it may be able to be saved with some extensive cleanup.
