has been building the ecotec engine in various forms since it first appeared on US cars. I'll guess that the Deutschmark - er - Euro - being what it is, it costs GM less to build the engine in the USA and ship it than to build it next door in Kaiserslauten. Note that Saab is simply a commercial customer, so internal politics regarding where the engine must come from no longer apply. Also, the US cars that previously used the DI 2.0T are no longer made: Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky, Chevrolet Cobalt SS and HHR SS, while the Buick Regal 2.0T isn't made here yet. GM could also be motivated to keep the 2.0T DI production line intact pending the launch of US made Regals, and for sure the German Unions would resist putting US made motors into Opels and Vauxhalls.
