Service Theft Alarm and Intermittent alarm in cold

I know there have been numerous messages on this, but they're too scattered to pull the information I need. I've got 2001 Saab 9-5 SE. The service theft alarm on the SID has been going on for the better part of 6 months. A few weeks ago the alarm starting going off (seems to be every week or so around 7:30am) 2-3 times for about 10-15 seconds each time. We have recently started winter here in California (winter is a relative term here in cali). Is the cold weather a coincidence? From what I've seen in other posts the batteries in my service alarm may be going dead and may need to be replaced? Does this sound correct?
Are there alternatives to having a new one installed? I saw some pictures on how to DIY - they seemed to take too long and be too involved for someone of my limited electronics abilities. Are there other options out there to replace? What about disconnecting it? Any thoughts and directions would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks and happy holidays to all!
