I have also wondered about that and why some use it or not but I think it is something that the lab rats came up with because their computer screen said that this and that car with this and that engine develops a harmonic unbalance at some point and needs to be quenched.
Seems it was used (P/N 4967295) up until VIN 33040606 on the 4 cyl some year on Auto, some stick and only Auto on the V6 but the V6 use a different part number (P/N 5230016).
It's probably the same lab rats that came up with that no 4 cyl engines over 2.0L can "survive" without balance shafts even though some other car makers have done that without any problems for years.
