I finally got to see one of these in the flesh, and I agree, it definitely is fake (from the fake grain alone)... it looks ok in a way, but I think better in the photo than real life (to me)... I would rather it be an interestingly textured plastic or metal or other material than pretend to be wood...
vacuum pressing a veneer to that surface would be virtually impossible. The corners are just too tight combined with complex geometry...
One could easily manufacture it out of solid wood, but the downsides would be cost + wood stability concerns (over the automotive temperature/humidity range). One could pick a low t/r wood + that would help... But the dimensions + geometry of that shape would require a thick +/or complex glue up + lots of stock would end up as chips on the floor... no big deal for a 1 off, but they need automotive processes to keep costs reasonable... I doubt it's economically feasible even with a computer automated 3d router...
I suppose if I ever owned one of these cars out of warranty, a "fun" project might be to build a modified version of the center console out of solid wood + wire the window switches into it (where they belong)... not likely to happen!
James...
