Not to discourage you, but I see a fair number older cars with 2.3L dead engines in the classifieds around here (not necessarily all sludge, but wouldn't surprise me if its the root cause of a good % of those)... there's a guy a few threads below with a 2000 Aero with a dead engine... we've been looking for the right 9-5 (off + on) for a couple years + I've seen one that for sure sludged + was worked on several times by the dealer to remedy (and this one had the most meticulous owners I've met in this search - dealer receipts for everything, ordered, in a folder!). have yet to see a car with pcv#6 (not even the sludged car worked on by the dealer!)... have yet to run into an owner who's heard of it (we're in Canada)! our indy's seen a bunch of sludged cars (bought at least one for the tow-truck charge!), but also has some high mileage 9-5 owners as well... a lot probably has to do with driving habits + maintenance...

I agree that probably not all sludge or are a problem, but even if it's only 10%, I think due diligence is wise when purchasing used, even on the newer models... I looked at a 2005 wagon at a less than ideal dealer, pulled out the dipstick + the oil was black like tar... doesn't necessarily mean sludge, but sure not well maintained!

maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places! that said, I did find a 2004 for my parents + it has been flawless so far (managed to coerce the dealer into showing me a screen of work done on his computer + a bunch of key maintenance hump items had been done)...

as far as the price, around here, one can get a 2004 or 2005 for $9k... 2002 Aero is definitely more attractive than linear... depends on condition, but I'm seeing linears of that vintage go regularly in the $5k range, so $7k range is probably reasonable for a decent Aero... the rarity of the aero/wagon/stick might make it worth more to the right buyer (even if not as attractive to all buyers)... maybe this one is really nice + worth it to the right buyer...

good luck!

James...
