Flat Tire at 75 mph

I don't know if this qualifies as a 'blowout', but driving to work this AM I heard a pop that sounded as if I had hit something (I don't think I did) and then a few seconds later I started to hear a loud noise -- like I was dragging something, or lost a muffler, or I wasn't even sure if it was the Z3 I was passing at the time that was making the noise. I pull over, and I have a left rear flat. So, although I've never had a similar experience to compare to, the car ('01 lpt, with the original Michelins) handled like a champ -- I had no idea other than the noise -- and this was at 75 mph! Had this happened in another car would I have lost control or worse? I don't know. But if this is in any way indicative of anything 'special' about a Saab -- then here's another real world experience that worked out just fine. Everyone I've told gets all worried, 'are you alright?' and I feel almost embarrassed (but grateful) that it was such a non-event.
A question/comment though: When changing the tire, the lug nuts I'm used to are actually screws on this car. Thus when trying to put on the donut, there are no lugs to hang the tire on -- so putting the tire on and lining up the screw holes was a bit awkward, and took me longer than normal to do. If it had been raining or worse, this would have been a much more unpleasant experience. Does anyone know the point of these screws vs. the 'normal' lugs?
I only wish I kept a box of wet wipes in the trunk (the tire bag is a great idea -- how about throwing some wet wipes in there too?).
Now I just have to hope the tire only needs a plug.
