The main function of shocks is to reduce or dampen spring movement.You may have witnessed a car with very worn or broken shocks go over a speed bump and bounce up and down for the next 10 -15 feet. Gas charged shocks, such as those used On 9.5 probable do add some, but very little to ride height. Ride height is really a function of the springs. Weak springs allow the car to move a greater movement vertically. Weak shocks allow a greater number of up down cycles .Fitting new shocks to worn springs will help, temporarily.The new shocks will carry some of the load that should be on the springs leading to premature failure of the shocks.How fast they fail is proportional to how worn the springs are. The rear springs in Saab's seem to be prone to sagging.Placing spacers between the spring bottom and the spring seat, part of the shock, is a popular and relative cheap way to lengthen spring life,correct ride height, when changing out rear shocks.How thick a spacer you need can be determined by the ride height. This is the distance vertically, from the bottom lip of the rim to the underside of the rear fender flare.Over time the left side seems to sag more.There are several posts as to what the correct measurement should be for the year/model.A decrease in ride height causes an increase in camber, rear wheels angle out more at bottom, as when the car is under a heavy load condition.
