So was it a little indentation that you could get the set screw back into?
Much of the under dash repairs nowadays I use a 1'x1' mirror glued to a solid surface (so you don't crack it).
You place it on the floor and shine your flash light into the mirror and work from there (like a dentist).
It helps a lot having the "bigger picture" so to speak when trying to figure out what's going on up there.
Doing Volvo brake boosters the same way since it is 4 nuts hidden up in between brake pedal arms and brackets.
