It used to be a fail safe way to rule out a neutral safety switch on older cars and even the NG900 in mid 90s by putting it in Neutral or "rowing" the gear shifter back and forth but the way that these newer gear selector switches fail with cutting out power to starter relay is a bad solder joint on the circuit board of the switch, not a bad contact of copper pins inside switch.
Where the whole wire harness enters the gear selector switch it is a portion of the wires embedded in epoxy. Inside the epoxy, the wires are soldered to the board that leads out to the contact fingers.
it is that solder connection that goes bad and opens up with heat. When cold, the wire and board makes contact again.
