Re: TESTING MAF Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: TESTING MAF, saabsince 93b ![]() ![]() |
Here is a case study I did years ago on a 1996 Volvo 960 where the air mass meter was so bad that when trying to accelerate down the street flooring the gas pedal, the car was bucking and misfiring so badly and refused to go higher than 5000 rpm so it didn't even shift into second gear. The shift at full throttle happens at 6000rpm on that car.
I was fault tracing ignition and plugs for the longest time until I finally plopped a new air mass meter in and everything was fine with that. Couldn't even believe it was not an ignition problem with all that misfire going on.
So I decided to see if I could find any measurable differences between the old and new since this one was in such a bad shape but I couldn't really see anything standing out. Granted, I didn't do a full throttle test of either air mass meters since I don't have a test bench to keep the car on for steady state testing as it says in Nicks posted paper.
It's been the same through the years where I have done some simple testing of the signal wire from AMM back to ECU and you can never find like a smoking gun value where you can point and see, that's where the problem lies.
This is also reflected in how poorly the rebuilt air mass meters perform and it is really no use to buy anything else than genuine new Bosch or genuine rebuilt Bosch meters. All the Python, Fuel injection lab and whatever exotic name they might have, they only work for a little while or not at all out of the box. The only good thing with them is that they are cheap so you don't loose that much money when you have to buy a new Bosch later on.
