Susan,
I just changed out the alternator on our 2003 Aero at 108,000 miles. You can search my previous posts for details. I took it out from the top. I am not a mechanic but I would say it is relatively simple, just takes time, patience, and no fear of greasy hands. I installed a rebuilt Bosch alternator from eEuroparts. Working great so far. The dealer wanted waaay too much money to do the job. So if you have the time, go for it. Good luck.
