Well, I have done pre 2005's with almost any head unit, Sony, etc. One non HK I replaced / bypassed the amp and routed wires to the back where I put an after market amp. I assume that the amp is in the same place with the same connections, maybe not, but I have done a line level replacement to the standard amp and a speaker out (a bit risky) to the standard HK or Pioneer amp and seems to work ok. Was just in my wife's 2001 wagon with HK, normal head and still sounds pretty good. Have not spent much in the 2005+ cars to evaluate differences.
I agree on the GM Parts bin idea though......
I updated some of mine to get DVD, HD radio and XM and with another gadget can get sterring wheels controls back. Works pretty good. Another just replaced the head with a 1 din and I really enjoy the extra storage shelf....
