First thing to look at is the heater by-pass valve. It is in the center of the firewall behind a big wiring harness, and takes some hunting to find it. This valve stops hot coolant from going into the heater in the car when the Air conditioning is set to full cold.
It is actuated by engine vacuum and an electrical solenoid vacuum line valve and any time between 50,000 miles and 100,000 it will start leaking at the O ring that seals the shaft that moves in the valve. The coolant that leaks drips down on the exhaust and the catalytic converter which are very hot and produces steam when it hits the hot exhaust. You will not see coolant on the ground.
New valve is $65 or so, but can take a couple hours to install because it is very hard to get to the valve. You can also take the valve out and install a hose that eliminates the valve. Lots of us have done that. The hose is $28.00 at eEuroparts*com It is made by Mackay and most European Saab 95s have this instead of the by-pass valve.
You can search on this site and see lots of posts about this valve. Anyone with a 100,00 95 has replaced it.
I have 2 95 Aeros, both have had this valve replaced due to leaking. One now has the Mackay hose in it.
There can be other causes to low coolant, but check this one first.
