Homemade positive battery cable?

My 03 Aero left me stranded yesterday with a no start. The battery is less than 2 1/2 years old and after charging it started fine last night and then again this morning. After a search here I see a lot of comments about the positive cable being a potential problem. I only drive it every couple of weeks, so I'm guessing it just isn't charging completely due to the cable. I would prefer not to spend $150 on a new cable, but I can't find any info about making a new cable. Has anyone had any luck doing this? I looked at the picture at Eeuro and it looks like there are some brackets on the cable and a special connector to the fuse block. Can I splice into the cable before this connector or rewire and reuse the connector? Any tips or help on cable lengths or brands would be much appreciated before I tear into this. BTW, I've always thought the car cranked slowing since getting it last August - another symptom of a cable issue from what I've read here.
