Maybe the cooling fans have stopped working all together or that the low speed is not kicking in anymore building up too much pressure.
Could also be a sticking thermostat running up too much heat.
The temp gauge is not reliable on any new car but will only alert you when it is almost to late due to the electronic limits built into the program.
Some people also overfill the expansion tank due to some fuzzy cold level line marked on the expansion tank.
Look closely to see if you filled it cold to the cold mark and not to where the cold mark arrow pointing down show.
