I've used a sand bag. It works as long as you keep it a little closer to the driver's side from center. If you drive too aggressively it can move around. Or you might have to occasionally shift it left. The generic ones work, but the issue is often that the suction cup doesn't attach well enough to the plastic. Maybe that plastic flexes a little releasing the suction cup.
There are newer styles that use a friction, silicone surface. Many say these leave a residue on the dash.
