A so-called "total loss" is a purely financial calculation. Nothing else enters into the insurance company's process.
If the estimate to repair the car to the insurance co's standards exceeds something like 80-90% of the replacement value, it's faster, easier and cheaper to simply pay out the replacement value.
Of course, as the car's value decreases, so does the amount of damage it takes to hit that threshold. And good body work is NOT cheap.
I struck a bear last year in my '99 9-5 LPT. Bear was maybe 150 lbs, but took out the hood, AC cond, radiator, headlights, grille. Slight damage to fender and bumper. That part of the damage was nearly enough to total the car. Add in the fact that both airbags deployed, dash was torn, and seatbelt tensioner(s) fired. The SRS replacement cost exceeded the replacement value of the car.
The same "damage" to a new car would probably have had the insurance company repair the damage.
