What's it take to change a headlight lamp?

I am on vacation at OBX with minimal tools trying to replace the driver's side headlight bulb on my significant other's '96 sport. I have done this before but this time the spring clip slipped out. Its hard enough to replace the bulb with the clip in place but very hard to replace the clip by feel alone with large fingers. I would like to know if there is a trick to pulling out the whole headlight assembly. Can it be done with a screwdriver and a crescent wrench as with my CSE 9000? Any help would be appreciated.
