The transponder chip that allows the car to start is integrated with the remote on the 'all-in-1' keys offered from MY 2001. No remote, no starting of the car.
The earlier keys, where the remote was a separate item (often called the 'banana' remote) had the tiny transponder chip inside the key head. With those, you don't ever need to carry the 'banana' with you. The key will lock & unlock everything, and the transponder chip in the head will allow the car to start.
You CAN still get the older key styles, if you just want that. The catch is they only fit up to MY 2003 or so. In MY 2004 they changed the key blank, so you're stuck with the all-in-one.
