I almost did the same thing myself.
They attempted to change the shock with the car supported on a floor jack rather than fully off the ground on a proper hoist. Lifting one rear corner places torque on the sway bar, which causes the rear swing arm to lift slightly - just enough to prevent the shock eye from properly aligning wiht the swing arm.
They "thought" they could make it work by inserting the bolt into the swing arm and using the bolt to align the suspension. WRONG! The fine threads on the inside of the swing arm bolt hole will strip.
They may be able to make it work by chasing the threads from the other side (it is a thru hole) and using a second jack to compress the new shock slightly to get the proper alignment before inserting the bolt the correct way. This is what worked for me.
