My rebuild is only 400-500 miles ago, so I have no idea how well it will hold up in the VA winters (and my car is a mere youngster at about 113k+ miles). I think the important thing to remember is that this switch was NOT designed for repair. The fact that we do so speaks volumes for the undaunted pioneers who first cracked one open and in whose written guidance we trust and follow. Some folks on this board and another claim to have cleaned/rebuilt theirs over two years ago, but you have to remember the disclaimer: "Your mileage may vary." If the issue is really with wiring in the epoxy and not the dried and dirty grease inside the switch, none of us will ever know for sure since we will not dig it out and once you touch the switch, it is not in the same condition as it was before you touched it.
All I know for sure is that limp home mode is not fun. That's why I keep the OBD2 reader in the car.
