At 96K miles it's about due. I would really doubt a heater core at your mileage. The by pass valve can leak and not leave much on the ground because it's all coming out while you're driving.
You can get one for a Cadillac Catera (same part) and save some money.
It's not a hard job, just awkward because there's not a lot of room to use the tools. Put a big pan on the ground to catch the coolant that comes out. (I use an aluminum turkey pan).
A selection of slip joint and channel lock pliers will help you get the spring clamps on the hoses off. Note which hose goes where. Be sure to get the hoses back on really well or you'll still get a leak--ask me how I know!
