It all depends on the individual car.
My Saab used-car mantra is, "Always check the Iris report." I look for off-lease Saabs with documented service work and no history of repeat repairs on big-ticket components while under warranty. I would never consider a used Saab that was off-warranty for very long, as service documentation tends to become spotty.
This philosophy has served me well through 3 family 9-5's thus far: my 9-5 Aero sedan (2001, bought as CPO with 26K miles, now at 96K and strong and trouble-free as ever), our 9-5 Wagon (2000, bought with 40K and ran fine until totalled by a drunk 3 years later) and our current 9-5 Arc wagon (2004, bought as CPO, generally trouble-free as well, now at 80K miles.)
