Agree on taking out costs of accidents and discretionaries.
The tally on my 2003 Aero, which I bought new and now has 151k, is $6,858 not including those sorts of things (which only would add ~$750). I didn't track cleaning supplies or wiper blades but just about everything else. Major repairs included the DIC once, fuel pump, and throttle body. Still on the original exhaust, clutch, front suspension, rear brakes, turbo, etc.
I have a mechanic do some maintenance items (brake flushes, serpentine belts) but I do most everything else. This represents a huge savings. I did the rear shocks for $260 and the front pads and rotors for $240. This car requires a bit more maintenance than my other cars that got up to this mileage (a '92 Saturn SC awesome car and a 2000 Civic) but not much really and with Saabnet I'm able to do a lot of it myself.
