You're right to be concerned, but if the car has been maintained and had frequent oil changes (like every 5K miles) with synthetic your chances of avoiding trouble are better. You can have a mechanic drop the pan and take a look -- that's not a cheap job, something like $200 - $300 but worth it for the peace of mind. I f you have any doubts, walk away Many people think the earlier years of the 9-5 have nicer interior materials, so if you can find a solid one that's sludge-free you can get a great car for low money. But you have to be certain there's no sludge problems.
