Considering a Swedish shift

I have been lurking on and off for about 6 months since I moved back from a 2-year job in the middle east. I am a long time RWD Volvo owner and lover but I am considering a dalliance into the "other" Swedish brand. I am driving a 1990 240 DL sedan beater at the moment and as much as I like it...
I need a more grown-up car and I love wagons (this is my first sedan) and hatchbacks. The 9-5 Sportcombi just keeps popping up on my radar.
Any of you former Volvo 240/740/760/940 owners that can give me some perspective?
In short, I need something quieter than the venerable 240 but handles just as well or better (all mine have had the IPD sways and urethane bushings and most have had upgraded strut inserts/shocks). It would love the power of the 940/740 turbo but the fuel economy of Honda Civic. Oh, and I have three medium to really large dogs to haul around along with the DW on road trips.
I considered the 9000 hatch, the 9-3 sportcombi, the Mercedes E-series wagon, and the venerable Volvo V70. I seem to be drawn again and again to the 9-5 because of the mix of size, fuel economy, "sportiness" and value in that order. FYI, I do all my own maintenance so DIY friendly is also very important.
Am I on the right track?
Mike
