THis just happened to a car I sold to my brother (never do that, btw). He was told 1800 for a used one. I found him a rebuilt one for 500 (600 but with 100 of that prepaid for the core) and the mechanic was going to install it for around 250. A new one would be in the 1800 range, I suppose but something is funky with 2500 for a turbo install. That would have to include the entire turbo, ie the exhaust manifold as well, and may 4-5 hours of labor. I don't know what the book says but I know that it would only be an hour or two were I to have done the job myself. If you want contact info for the rebuilder here in OHIO, contact me.
If all the other things have already been addressed then what should be closer to 1000 to fix would be well worth it in my opinion. It's still a lot of cash and you will end up doing what works best for you but the dilemma still remains: what would you purchase for 1000, or even 2500, that would be worry free and drive as well as your 9-5? Every time I have to replace or repair something I find myself asking the same question and then I end up doing what it takes to fix the car.
Good luck.
