All Aisin boxes are not made alike...
From the Mobil 3309 web page:
"Mobil ATF 3309 is an exceptionally high-performance lubricant that meets original equipment manufacturers’ specifications for use in **CERTAIN** slip-controlled lock-up automatic transmissions manufactured by Aisin AW Co. Ltd." (emphasis added)
Both the 4-speed and 5-speed Saab 9-5 automatic transmissions are Aisin boxes, and they spec different fluids.
As Bret says, the auto trans is an EXPENSIVE part of the car. You're not going to gain any added performance by running something different in it, and you do run the risk of degraded performance, if not outright damage to the internals of the transmission. Saving forty or fifty bucks on auto trans fluid could cost you thousands if the wrong fluid damages the transmission.
ATFs are not like motor oils. You could run straight 30 weight non-synthetic oil in a Saab motor, and wouldn't do any damage, provided you change it frequently enough, don't overheat it, cool the motor & turbo properly, etc.. The same is not true of ATFs. Auto transmissions work with clutches and friction bands awash in ATF, and using the wrong ATF could damage the friction linings (think brake pad or clutch disc material) by eating away at the material, or they may not provide the manufacturer specified friction, and your trans will slip. This is especially true of older transmissions, where there was the "Dexron" camp (GM, Chrysler, etc.) and the "Ford" camp (Ford, Borg-Warner, etc.). You never want to put Dexron in a box that specs Ford Type F (like the BW 35 & 37 of the Saab 99 & 900), or v-v.
