Sometimes you can get away with being stupid..... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 11:47:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I replaced my Coolant By-Pass Valve with the MacKay hose kit last month. Everything went well except I broke the rigid plastic brake booster vacuum line while doing this job and had to wait 2+ weeks for a replacement part. I installed that last week and while I was under the hood I topped up the coolant recovery bottle which was down just a little bit from my earlier cooling system work.
This morning I started my car and received the "Coolant Level Low" message on the SID. I thought that odd since the level had barely moved in the three weeks prior to replacing the booster line. I popped the hood and discovered I had no cap on the coolant recovery bottle!!
I again topped up the resevoir, installed the spare coolant recovery bottle cap I had handy in the garage (everyone has one of these, right?) and everything was good again except for the burning question of what happened to the other cap?
Half-way to work I suddenly remembered! When topping off the resevoir last week I had placed the cap in the pocket of the grimy coveralls I wear when doing car work. The cap must still be there. I will check later tonight, but in the meantime I have driven nearly 1,000 miles with no cap on the resevoir bottle and no alarming excursions of the temperature gauge (I regularly check after last summer's radiator problem).
Sometimes you can get away with being stupid.
