2003 4cyl: Check engine light / car dies

I have an '03 9-5 Linear Automatic (72k, owned since new). Earlier this evening I heard a whine while accelerating, dropped it into neutral, revved the engine a bit and I think the whine disappeared until I put it back in gear. Then I noticed the "check engine" icon (not "check engine" text) was on. Figured the best thing to do was get off the highway as quickly as possible. Took the exit and waited for a stoplight to change. After the light turned green I tapped the gas pedal and the car immediately died. It started a couple of minutes later. I was able to drive it to a parking lot before it died again. I've already had the crank position sensor replaced so I've ruled that out. There was no whine or check engine light associated with the CPS failure.
Any idea what's going on? Is it a fuel pump issue? The battery has plenty of charge so I've ruled that out too.
Also: Over the last few months I've felt that the acceleration from a dead stop has not been as good as I remember when the car was younger. It feels like it sometimes takes a long time to work up any speed. Kind of felt like a classic 900 with a Borg-Warner automatic. I started using Conoco gas instead of Shell and thought that the performance slightly improved. Ran a can of Techroline through it too.
Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated.
