from other side?

pulled the dash cover from driver side and was able to reach in the floor vent and by hand rotate the distribution drum so now getting air out the front vents. the stepping motor is definitely turning the yellow piece but it is not turning the drum. when I turned the drum manually, the white end piece on the driver side does turn so is the rod that connects all the way across just not seated into the yellow piece? someone mentioned pushing it in from the driver side but the white end piece is not jutting out. it's already completely flush against the housing so cant push the rod from that. so how?

also, do I just rank the yellow piece out with some pliers? from the pic on eEuro it looks like it is held in with clips that snap in.

hoping on Mon morning everyone is back and can advise. thanks!
