So i went the rebuild route after weighing all options for my 2003 aero with 110k miles. I got a used transmission from Goldwing in NY for $925 shipped, then my local shop put it in for $960. However, I had a few issues - I needed a new rear seal, a new rear transmission mount, the axle would not come out of the old transmission so they had to put on a new one, I had a noise coming out of the engine - calcified remnants of oil that was superheated, so they dropped the oil pan and cleaned it out. so all that other stuff was around 400 installed. So with tow ($90). I ended up spending around $2500 for this. Hope to keep it running for another 3 years and then will see how she is doing. alot cheaper to do this than a newer car so I just bit the bullet.
FYI - If you are having work done on your saab in georgia - Go to MandM Saab in woodstock. I went to S&J and atlanta autoworks intown and was quoted 4 times the amount that MandM quoted me. They were also fast and did a few things at cost. Will never go anywhere else.
