I have hauled a little stone in the 9-5, but very little really + knowing they were touchy to over loading, I: 1) drove slowly + smoothly picking a smooth route + short distance, 2) uniformly distributed load in the foot wells and only a small amount in the trunk, 3) only put in each footwell + trunk an amount I could lift comfortably - probably 50-60lbs in each... ie less than the weight of a person (and not even 10% what we were putting in my neighbour's minivan)... I think more damage would have been caused by our road trip this summer: 3 bikes on an ultralight hitch, ski box, trunk full of stuff for family of 4... but if it can't do that, it's not a very useful car!
c900 on the other hand? the sofas were the light things... how about all the tile for a kitchen + bathroom (all 4 tires rubbing fenders on bumps), 10 sheets of plywood on the roof, big loads of drywall, big load of flagstone, as many or more rock loads as the 9-5 got, annual loaded road trips... after 20 years, no rub marks on the springs, front shocks + all springs are original, replaced the rears once... it's hauled more than most pickups!
to be fair, we've only had the 9-5 for < a year so who knows what the PO did... but it wasn't sagged when I got it + was generally in very good shape (all signs point towards a perfect PO: affluent + persnikety condo owner) + I checked for this stuff prior to purchase. Tires cupped catastrophically in 5000 miles for me!
I'm hoping the konis + wagon springs will be more robust... I love the car (+ drives great even loaded), but it's gotta be able to function in our family...
James...
