Back in the old days, with domestic (USA) cars, the filters always had instructions printed on them something to the effect of:
Apply coat of new oil
Tighten filter by hand until gasket makes contact with engine.
Tighten an additional 3/4 of a turn.
I haven't changed a domestic filter in a long time, have done may Japanese car oil changes though. Don't remember seeing the 3/4 additional turn anymore.
You say "tighten by hand"
My mother's hand or Adam Meadows' (Indianapolis Colts fans might know him)?
I'm sticking with the 3/4 turn after making gasket contact. If I have a good grip on the filter, and have only gone an additional 1/2 turn, may stop there, otherwise, I'll put filter wrench on and get somewhere between 1/2 turn and 3/4 turn.
