I had lugs loosen up on an old VW as the result of an autocross and noted the same clunking during accel / decel. Torque paint and a decent torque wrench are a good defense against such incidents. I doubt the late model 9-5 driver had been autocrossing. Overlooked lug bolt torque would be my guess.
