Question on Timing Chain Noise that Goes Away w Temp

How much timing chain noise is normal on a cold (just over freezing) startup? I have a 1999 2.3t SE with 178K miles, and the chain rattles right up at the passenger side of the valve (cam) cover for about a minute, progressively quieting as the engine warms. I checked the tensioner - it's at 13mm. I am planning a roll-in replacement together with new cam cover chain guide, cam cover gaskets, and tensioner O-ring & washer (parts coming). I isolated the noise, and it's definitely not a pulley. Oil passages in the tensioner are fully clear, no signs of sludge. I wouldn't think the tensioner is designed to be oil pressure-assisted, but is it? Oil pressure light is not on. Only other reason that I can think of for this behaviour is that the dimensions are just on the edge for the amount of slop necessary to rattle, and that as the entire engine warms up, the differential expansion for the various parts put the engine just barely on the 'okay' side. What about 13mm on the tensioner?
Any comments? (Anders, John Myers ? - but I suspect that the two of you will seldom see this temp at your locations) Thanks in advance !
