Coolant in oil related to turbo failure?

I'm a longtime Saab fan and I own a 1988 900 turbo convertible. Repairing cars is my hobby and I've worked on several Saabs, including a 2002 9-5 - I replaced the turbo. However, I'm still not sure how to diagnose this:
I found a 1999 9-5 online for sale as a "mechanics special." The seller seems very honest and states that the head gasket was replaced, only for the owner to find out that the head gasket was never the issue; it actually needs a turbo. This seems accurate; it blows smoke after warming up- kind of a blue/gray smoke, and it doesn't smell particularly sweet. It's definitely not white coolant smoke, that's for sure.
What's throwing me for a loop is that the dipstick looks like a classic head gasket failure dipstick- it looks like a "milkshake." The car started right up and ran fairly well (minus turbo smoke), and the coolant reservoir was NOT pressurized, there was no oil in the coolant- just coolant in the oil.
Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to include detail. Short version: Is coolant in the oil a normal issue with turbo failure?
