What are the major maintenance jobs to look at/for in these cars and mileage wise when should these have been completed and what is the longevity of the replacements? :
Manufacturer's recommended service intervals, except oil changes should be twice as often.
perusing the board it seems there is a timing (chain/belt?)issue?
Not really. Quality (full synthetic, XW40) at 5000 mile intervals is the issue. Chain issues follow from failure in the Oil Change Interval. Timing belt maintenance per the manual (V-6), plus changing timing belt pulleys while in there are all that is required.
Also some sort of issue with serpentine belt and pulleys?
Same as with timing belt. Change the serp belt at the recommended interval along with the idler pulleys (and tensioner pulley).
What is the deal with the oil sludge- is there a good/quick way to check for this on a potential buy?
In order of cost/difficulty:
remove oil plug and scrape the pan with a wire to see if sludge particles come out.
remove the valve cover and assess visually the top end and timing chain cover.
Pull the oil pan and know for sure.
Any issues with either type of transmission?
Not really. Anyone can f*** up a manual transmission, but it takes special skill to f*** up the automatics.
Most mainenance and repair parts are available for the (OG)9-5. Since it's not in current production, the factory shutdown has minimal effect.
