Re: Can the NSS be cleaned internally?? Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Can the NSS be cleaned internally??, MI-Roger ![]() |
I think I read about someone grinding off the rivets and taking it apart to clean and got his working again.
I have my doubts about it since after what I have found out, it is not the sliders and contact surfaces that is the problem but a solder connection between the in/outgoing wires and the circuit board and that portion is submerged in epoxy.
On the 94-96 900 we could trace the problem to being the dielectric grease inside the switch going bad with age and cold since you could trip or fix a transmission limp home problem by rowing the gear shifter back and forth.
On the no crank problems I have had, I could keep the key in cranking position with one hand and "grind" the gear shifter back over Park or Neutral positions forever with not a single hint of catch from the starter.
That to me tells me that it is not the sliders or contact rails inside the switch that is the problem but a joint or crimp somewhere breaking down with heat. That also explains why they come back to life again over and over when they are cooled down.
I broke open the epoxied area on a switch ones and saw how the wires are attached to the circuit board. Since it was too much trauma used it was hard to say if the wires were loose before or after I was done with it. But it looked like it is one of these press/heat/weld kind of style joint, not like an old fashioned solder blob.
