Sounds like the reverse gear went south.
I'm doing a transmission swap today for the same symptoms. Going forward with no problems but wont move backwards.
These transmission have very few problems but when the do have a problem, it is usually the reverse gear failing in a couple of different ways.
The other way is sometimes that they have two gears engaged at the same time so when you put it in reverse and give gas the car almost moves backwards but with a screeching from the transmission clutches working in different directions.
